Protocol Agreement
The Protocol Agreement provides a framework for continued collaboration between the Alberta Government and First Nations. Under the Protocol Agreement, the Grand Chiefs and the Premier meet at least annually. In addition, the Grand Chiefs and Ministers meet at least semi annually to discuss matters of mutual importance.
The Protocol Agreement functions as a broad umbrella agreement, under which meaningful discussion, information sharing, and the exploration of issues of mutual concern can occur. There may be opportunities to participate in other specific processes or sub-tables, involving other sectors or ministries, established through sub-agreements between the Grand Chiefs and the appropriate Ministers.
