The Government of Alberta’s First Nations Consultation Policy on Land Management and Resource Development
A Quick History
- September 2000: In Strengthening Relationships: The Government of Alberta's Aboriginal Policy Framework, Alberta committed to consult with Aboriginal people when land management and resource development decisions may infringe their existing treaty or other constitutional rights.
- May 2002: Alberta started development of a made-in-Alberta consultation policy.
- September-December 2003: First round of discussions about the policy with First Nations and industry.
- January-July 2004: Second round of discussions with First Nations and industry.
- August 2004: Draft consultation policy is refined based on input from First Nations and industry.
- November 2004-May 2005: Indepth discussions begin with First Nations and industry on developing Consultation Guidelines.
- May 16, 2005: The Government of Alberta's First Nations Consultation Policy on Land Management and Resource Development is approved.
- April 2006: Framework for Consultation Guidelines approved
- Sept. 1, 2006: The Government of Alberta's First Nations Consultation Guidelines on Land Management and Resource Development approved
- Nov. 14, 2007: Revised First Nations Consultation Guidelines released publicly
- April 2008: Beginning of external review process to revise policy, as per the May 2005 document
