Traditional Use Studies (TUS)

A Traditional Use Study (TUS) can identify where First Nations people hunt, fish, and trap on public land. Information contained in a TUS can also inform consultation and resource management decision-making and flag where potential impacts might exist.

During consultation, a TUS can help avoid adverse impacts to treaty rights in Alberta, especially where the First Nation community shares the identity of significant sites with the province. TUS information helps build positive relationships between First Nations, government and industry in Alberta that serve as the foundation to future consultation activities.

In 2003, Alberta developed its Best Practices Handbook for Traditional Use Studies. This handbook is available through Aboriginal Relations’ Aboriginal Consultation Unit.
